“Zugunruhe“
or also referred to as migration-anxiety is typically the fluttering of wings, tapping the ground, pacing or other symptoms of restlessness that would occur right before a big migration.
I found out about the term in an instagram comment section where a young trans woman was posting herself playing piano, hoping it would help her to get out of the South, which was suffocating her.
The comments were really beautiful and someone dropped this gem about Zugunruhe, a german word for migration-anxiety. The OP said she loved it.
I adore the ways queer people offer each other comfort and are able to point out beauty and energy even in a state of being trapped. Still, there’s a dark tone in zugunruhe, as it reminds me of the many phycotic behaviours that can be seen with caged animals. Zugunruhe could come and go within the confines of the cage and never find release. All that pent up energy, is it a survival stragety or madness?
I want to distill this dynamic yet sad phenonenom and turn it into sound. I’m still fascinated with longing, but zugunruhe introduces a different kind of beat,
a sense of “this is the day” even if it actually isn’t and won’t be anytime soon.

There is a lighthouse on the island where my mother lives.
Its windows are narrow and arched at the top. The walls are thick, so the light has to go through a corridor.
Inside the lighthouse, it’s crooked and cold and romantic. It lives in its own time, I sense.
I knew we had something in common, the first time I saw it. Like lighthouses, I too am apt to standing still and yearning.
I like how it’s always there. I like how I need to make en effort to go see it. Visiting it can feel like a pilgrimage.
I am interested in assigning human attributes to otherwise inanimate objects. I am also interested in treating an object in my research as if I have a long-term relationship to it.
Right now, I am in a waiting game with lighthouses. They show themselves to me, and I continue writing an ever evolving tale where we speak to each other.
I am constructing a fate. Same as when i go about something confidently after reading a tarot deck that assured me of good fortune
